ELA Motors, a Papua New Guinean Company

Toyota Tsusho (PNG) is the trading arm of Toyota Motor Company and is represented in Papua New Guinea by Ela Motors.

Ela Motors itself is a Papua New Guinean Company with its shareholders being Toyota Tsusho South Pacific Holdings Pty. Ltd., MTSL, Nambawan Super Limited, National Superannuation Fund, Defense Force Retirement Benefits Fund, QBE Insurance (PNG), and over seventy (70) other minor shareholders.

 Company Brands

 The Company is a distributor of a range of a comprehensive range of Automotive and Marine products including:

·                  Massey Ferguson farm machinery and tractors

·                  Yamaha Boats and outboard motors

 In all market segments in which the Company competes they have taken the number one position and dominate in terms of market share. This can be attributed to a real focus on Customer Satisfaction, the development and sourcing of products which are suited to the harsh operating conditions of Papua New Guinea and a strategic network of 16 branches nationwide.

 The Business Operation

 Ela Motors has been in operation in Papua New Guinea for over 46 years; making it one of the longest established businesses in the region. Total employee numbers are in excess of 820 with 800 National employees and 20 expatriate staff.

 Ela Motors has one of the longest established training centers in Papua New Guinea supplying world class automotive technicians for over 45 years and has recently developed a partnership with Australian Pacific Technical College as an accredited training provider.

In order to meet customer demand and ensure a truly national coverage, Ela Motors are the only automotive supplier in Papua New Guinea to operate sixteen fully functional, wholly owned branches strategically located throughout the country with an additional two joint venture/agencies supporting these operations.

To support this scale of operation Ela Motors operates a National Distribution Center located in Lae to distribute and assist all franchises with stock holding for Parts regardless of franchise.

Total inventory value for this operation alone is in excess of twenty million kina in parts and accessories. To support new vehicle sales and ensure adequate stock coverage the inventory value in terms of vehicles is in excess of fifty five million kina.

Quality Assured

The Company operates to the highest level of Quality Assurance and is regularly audited by Toyota Tsusho and Toyota Motor Company in order to assess compliance and ensure customer satisfaction is maintained.

To assist in this the Company operates the ERA Dealer and Customer Service Management System, a fully integrated computer program in all Branches, which includes vehicle sales, parts, service, accounts and administration. All Ela Motors departments have immediate access to the total stock holding whether it be parts, vehicles or service history.

Customer Satisfaction

Customer Satisfaction is a real focus for the Company and all aspects of the business are monitored and reported on a monthly basis to assess areas of strength and weakness from a customer’s perspective. Satisfaction measurement and reporting for New Vehicle Sales, Parts and Service are done to the exacting Toyota Motor Company criteria and are in line with other distributors of the brand worldwide.

Headquartered in Westlake Village, Calif., J.D. Power and Associates is a global marketing information services company operating in key business sectors including market research, forecasting, performance improvement, Web intelligence and customer satisfaction. In terms of new car purchasing the JD Powers surveys are universally recognized as the most comprehensive and authoritative source of information regarding quality from the customers perspective.

 The Initial Quality Study serves as the industry benchmark for new vehicle quality measured at 90 days of ownership. This survey is used by manufacturers worldwide to help them design and build better vehicles and by consumers to help them in their vehicle purchase decisions. Initial quality has been shown over the years to be an excellent predictor of long-term durability, which can significantly impact consumer purchase decisions. The study captures problems experienced by owners in two distinct categories -design-related problems and defects and malfunctions.

 Toyota Motor Corporation captured 10 segment awards—more than any other corporation in the 2009 study—including five for Lexus, four for Toyota and one for Scion. In addition the Toyota Motor Corporation assembly plant in Higashi-Fuji, Japan, received the Platinum Plant Quality Award for producing vehicles yield the fewest defects and malfunctions. Plant awards are based solely on average levels of defects and malfunctions and exclude design-related problems.

A contractor based in Australia is holding up work on the 9mile weighing station outside Lae, Morobe Province. Works Minister Hon Don Polye said work on the weighing station began last year however, the contractor has not began to install the instruments needed. The contactor is also the supplier of the instruments needed at the weighing station.  The Minister said vehicles were carrying heavy loads up and down the Lae - Madang-Highlands Highway and this was wearing out the roads. Mr Polye said there are plans to build other weighing stations along the Highlands Highways at either Toguba, Southern Highlands Province or at Kagul, in Western Highlands Province. {jcomments on}
