Toyota Corolla maintained its position as the world most popular small car with 908, 661 Corollas sold last year.
According to Ela Motors Toyota Tsusho (PNG) Ltd, global sales of Toyota Corolla was 16.3 percent more than its nearest competitor.
The company said Toyota had plans to lift sales even higher with plans just announced for a new factory in China to produce 100,000cars a year from 2012.
The sales figures for 2009 were compiled by economic forecaster IHS Global Insight. Results were published by Forbes magazine.
Two other Toyota vehicles were also among the top 10 sellers. These were Camry and Yaris.
Corolla is produced in 16 countries and sold in 140 countries including PNG. After 44 years and nine full model changes, global Corolla sales now exceed 32 million. It is estimated that over the past 40 years, one Corolla car has been sold on average every 40 seconds
More than any other car, Corolla built the reputation of the Japanese automotive industry – and that of Toyota.{jcomments on}
