One of the main causes of accidents in the roads in Papua New Guinea is intoxicated drivers.

According to statistics from Motor Vehicle Insurance Limited (released at the end of last year), 85 percent of drivers involved in accidents were found to have consumed alcohol prior to the accident. Also, 18 out of 20 pedestrians who died on our roads were intoxicated with alcohol.

Recently Port Moresby General Hospital Accidents and Emergency Center coordinator Dr Sam Yockopua, said that in a recent study they did on causalities at the A&E , to 50% and 70% of the 550 casualties related to road traffic accidents and 100% of the accidents along the Hiritano and Magi Highways were alcohol related.

To counter this growing problem, www.pngcars.com, the motoring news and resource site for the road communities in PNG,  has begun an awareness campaign on the website and through social media such as Facebook  and others to educate drivers in Papua New Guinea and also in the world, on the dangers of Drink Driving.

You can see the PNG Cars campaign here on www.pngcars.com . On PNG Cars we focus on producing one good article per month so instead of overwhelming the readers with information that will ignore, we present only one article with a simple and strong message against Drink Driving that they cant ignore.
