Torque

In the reviews I keep saying Torque, Torque and some lay persons might be wondering what I am writing about. Torque requires further explanation but for now I’ll leave that to the engineers (sorry). Torque is the most important element of a car engine’s output. If your vehicle is climbing a hill (say Lawes Rd hill) with a fair load of your wantoks sitting at the back and you don’t have to change your gears too often, then your car has excellent torque characteristics.
When you are trying to buy a car look not only at the maximum torque figure but also at the engine revolutions per minute (rpm). In the spec for the Terios it reads 140Nm/4400rpm. This means that 4400rpms, the vehicle will develop its maximum torque. Ideally, the lower a cars engine rpm, the better. Different classes of cars have different torque characteristics.
Electronic Fuel Injection

If you are fuel consumption conscious, ie you worry about the cost of fuel and how much your car is consuming, than you should consider vehicles that have Electronic Fuel Injection systems. The EFI more efficiently controls the flow of fuel into the engine of a car, giving the vehicle more power and consumes less fuel. An EFI system requires less maintenance than a carburetor system and most EFI systems less the life of the engine. However if there is a problem, an EFI system can be more expensive to overhaul. There are different types of EFI systems. The simplest uses a single fuel injector and its efficiency is midway between an cuberattor system and a full fuel injection system. The more common type of EFI system is multi-point fuel injection system which has an injector at each cylinder.
