PNG Indians help launch Women Only PMV service in Port Moresby.

There is a new Women-Only PMV bus service in Port Moresby.
The Indian Association of PNG donated a 25-seater bus to NCD. The vehicle cost K90, 000 and will be for women-only passengers as part of the public bus system in the city.
The driver of the bus will be a female and the crew as well.
The President of the Indian Association of PNG Sudhir Guru said there was immense pressure on working women and young schoolgirls to reach their destinations on time during peak hours in the morning and afternoon.
Often they became victims of opportunist while commuting and do not feel safe using the cities PMV services.
Sudhir said the concept has worked in India for the last 30 years and he felt it would work in Port Moresby too.
NCD Governor Powes Parkop said that if the pilot project was successful, more female-only PMV’s would operate in Port Moresby.
We have previously written about women only taxis in other countries and now this, women only buses. In other cities of the world where lady travellors have found themselves victims of verbal abuse, groping, robbery and assault on public transport buses, the governments have launched women only buses that have been succesful in creating a safer environment for female commuters. These countries include Mexico, India, Taiwan and Philipines.
There is no denying the fact that female commuters in Port Moresby many times have had bad experiences on the PMV buses. Lets hope this pilot project is successful and more buses are rolled out, and not just in Port Moresby.
