Irresponsible Attitued After Fatal Road Accident Creates Second Fatal Accident

A horrible incident occurred in Morobe recently when 13 people were killed in two separate road accidents at the same site in two days.
On August 15th a semi-trailer was involved in an accident which left 5 people dead on a section of road leading to Lae.

Police asked the owner to move the vehicle off the road as it would cause another accident. The owner ignored the police instructions. A day later, a passenger vehicle travelling from Madang to Lae ran into the same semi-trailer, killing eight more people. This brought the death toll in the same place to 13 people in two days.
A senseless tragedy that should never have happened, the driver  and the owner of the semi-trailer have both been charged with negligence over the accident.
Morobe Chief Supt Peter Guiness said they are deciding how severe the charges should be and if they should be tried for murder or manslaughter.
This is horrible story highlights firstly the disregard many drivers and vehicle owners have for others who use the highyways and secondly, how the authorities fail to use their authority time and time again to make the roads safer. They continue to give bad drivers and owners breaks. If they were more authoritve the first time, the owner would have moved the semi-trailer.Instead, they let him leave the vehicle on the road, resulting in the second accident the next day.
