Learn To Drive in Port Moresby: Driving Schools, Costs and Other Details.

So you are in Port Moresby and want to learn to drive. This article will help you with Driving School contacts, prices and other relevant information.

Driving Schools

Salvation Army Driving School

The Salvation Army Driving school has been the main choice for many beginners over the years.

The Salvation Army Driving School is located in this buildingIt is located at Boroko behind the Stop and Shop stores and opposite the Boroko public car park.

Lessons & Costs: The Salvation Army Driving School offers a module of ten lessons spread over a ten working days for K500.

This is a K50 per one hour lessons.

A Motor Traffic Driving Rules handbook is issued for students who enroll for the full ten lessons.

After the completion of the lessons, the student is issued a certificate of completion for the driving school.

You have to organise your own driving test with the Police department. If you want to use the Salvations Driving Schools vehicle to do the test, it will cost you K50.00 per hour.

If you have had previous driving lessons and want to use the the schools service to improve your confidence on the roads, you will need to book a minimum of 3 hours.

If you have learnt using an automatic vehicle, you will need to book a minimum of five hours with the Salvation Army Driving School.

Muruk Driving School

Muruk Driving has been in operation for over 10 years.

Muruk Driving School is located in this buildingLocation: They are located at the 2nd Floor of the Monian Haus building, Tabari Place Boroko.

Lessons and Costs: The Muruk Driving School caters mainly for beginners, offering 1hr courses per day over a period of 20 days for teaching begineers.

After the students is confident and the teacher is confident, a driving test is organised with the Traffic Police and the student takes the test and if they are succesful, get their license the same day.

As part of the package for beginners, the school assists students obtaining their Learners Permit, Police Test fee and finaly their licence.

Costs: Its K50 per lesson/per hour.

They also offer stand alone lessons for those who want to brush up with their skills before doing the driving test.

Papers You Need for Learn Driver

1. Learners Permit - You can download the application here or at the MVIL website, fill it out, and take back to MVIL with K30 payment or take it to the Central Traffic Registry at Gordons. You will then be issued the Learners Permit. Always bring it with you when learn driving.

2. Before you do the drivers test, you have to pay the fee for the test. It costs K20 and you pay it at the central registry at the Vulupindi Haus, first floor. Just ask the guards outside and they will direct you if you are confused.

3. Drivers Licence: If you successfully complete the test, the Police officers will give you a form indicating you have passed the test. This form also contains your details. Take this with K30 fee to the MVIL office or to the Central Traffic Registry and they will process your Driver licence. It will take between 10 - 30 minutes (average time). You will be issued a Probationary License (a P Licence).

After 12 months you can get the Full Class Driving Licence. The fee is K60.00. Download the applications here.

Some Tips After You Get Your P Licence and Driving in the City

1. Make Your P sign highly visible at the front and at the back of the vehicle if you are driving.

2. Take your time, Relax and drive.

3. When you are driving on two or three lane roads, use the slow lanes, the one in the middle or on the left hand side if you are not confident and driving slowly.

4. Ignore rude drivers behind you who are hitting their horns and flashing their lights at you to hurry up. Take your time. You pay your taxes, you have every right to drive as confidently as you can, even if this means driving slowly. And also, remeber, the chances of you being in an accident is quite high, so dont let anyone rush you.

5. Police and Traffic Officers will alwas pull P Platers over. Dont get anxious and angry with the police officers, it just increases your stress levels.

6. Always slow down at road junctions, intersections and roundabouts.

Places to Practice for Beginners

1. Bisini Park: This is a popular spot for many people to take driving lessons and practice. The spot is located between the Port Moresby Rugby League grounds and the AFL feild.

2. Jack Pidik Park: The park has lots of space for learn drivers to practice their skills. Also their is a network of paved streets here, part of a Telikom housing project that never got of the ground. You can use these streets to practice your signalling - while - driving skills etc.

3. Five Mile Hills: The hills along five mile are good to practice your 'stop and go' skills on an inclined road.
