Upgrade the System to Avoid Traffic Congestions

Building new roads, upgrading and widening existing roads is an expensive exercise and time consuming.

This is a professional opinion by civil engineering experts from the Papua New Guinea Institute of Engineers.

A statement released by the IEPNG President, Joseph Hamylton iterated that at this point of time the Papua New Guinea Government and stakeholders should consider upgrading the existing system.

Institute of Engineers concern over deteriorating road conditions

The institute of Engineers Papua New Guinea (IEPNG) expressed concerns in relation to the continually deteriorating road conditions and lack of road maintenance in the nation’s capital.

President of IEPNG, Joseph Hamylton highlighted important issues regarding such poor road conditions and maintenance.

He said that it has become a standard practice in PNG that civil construction companies are building roads and highways using their past experience that could be completely outdated.

Mr Hamylton added that road construction companies are also operating without employing professional civil engineers but carrying out those projects with only tradesmen.

City Traffic Woes.

The travelling public are calling on relevant transport authorities and the national government to quickly address traffic woes in the capital city.

Taxi drivers commuting the city’s routes and depending a lot on the traffic condition say the last decade has seen a dramatic accumulation in traffic congestion causing havoc to commuters going to work and schools.

They cited an increase in the number of second-hand and cheap vehicles imported into Papua New Guinea and also an influx of people migrating to the nation’s capital directly as triggering such traffic congestion.

Concerns have been raised by the public via respective media fraternities as a plea to the appropriate authorities and the national government to intervene.
