Giant Landslide Buries Villages and Cuts Road to PNG LNG Site in Southern Highlands.

A huge landslide along the Hides 4 Road in Southern Highlands has buried villages and houses.

Estimates of between 40 - 60 people are believed to be buried under the landslip.

The disaster near the Tumbi quarry of the PNG LNG project near Hides, Southern Highlands province, occurred between 3am and 5am on Monday morning.

From images and reports it looks like the side of a nearby mountain collapsed covering an area stretching about 2km and 500m wide and creating a 700m to 800m wide roadblock along the road from Hides PDL 1 to PDL 7 .

Major PNG LNG contractors and developers have agreed to stop construction activities and mobilise their resources in the disaster area.
