Tints Off

Tinted windscreen safety and legal concernTint

In the coming months vehicles with tinted windows will have to remove or decrease their tints to legal limits specifying how dark tinted windows can be on a vehicle.

This was announced by Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga and has directed that all vehicles driven by the Police Headquarters must be modified under this specification.

According to Commissioner Kulunga, many drivers and vehicle owners are not adhering to Traffic laws which quite clearly prohibit surface films to be attached to the windscreen of a motor vehicle other than a strip of tinted film not more than 15cm wide applied from the top of the screen.

“Many motorists are driving cars with tinted films applied to both the top and the bottom of the windscreens.”

He added that applying film to the bottom part of the windscreen is illegal.

Freeway fix dragging

The one lane bridge

The $80 million Poreporena Freeway since its unfortunate collapse continues to go through various phases of maintenance by Contract Company contracted by the authorities.

Reports exaggerated that the establishment of a temporary bridge across the fall would minimise traffic congestion by some percentage but this is not evident raising questions of how people in charge are going to address the issue effectively.

Travelling public are fearing that elections are around the corner and if nothing is being done to fast track the work being carried out the government will eventually change resulting in a slow process of getting the freeway upgraded.

Alternative durable infrastructure and technique

Culverts not too effective

As culverts are being washed away every now and then there is a call for civil engineers to advice the government of the day on possible alternatives to hold crossways for a sustainable period of time.

According to reports the cheap culverts that had been laid in initial road infrastructure developments in major roads across the country are giving away and cannot stand to the current weather situation causing havoc to the travelling public.

This was evident in the recent collapsing of the Poreporena Highway when a 10 by 10 meter ditch was formed in the middle of the frequently used freeway due to heavy down pours washing away the already overloaded culverts.

This in turn caused major traffic congestion within the nation’s capital for almost one month before a temporary bridge was built in place to reduce the congestion.

Bridge for Tegari people

The people of Tegari, in the Hela Province, today rejoiced as a major shift is taking place in their transportation infrastructure.

Thanks to insights of the Hela Transitional Authority chief executive officer William Bando and his chairman and member for Tari-Pori, James Marape in identifying significant impact infrastructure development project for the people of Hela a new bridge had been built for the Tegari people.

This is being facilitated by the Southern Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru.

While expressing gratitude to Governor Agiru for the undertaking, Landowner Chairman for the Pureni people, Joe Hapokaia iterated that there had been countless deaths just trying to cross mighty Tegari River.

“The days of using dugout canoes from the Dark Ages just to cross the Tegari River are over,” he added.

Mr. Hapokaia made a call to the Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to extend the development of the road to an all-weather one, from Hiwanda through to pureni and onto Koroba.
